Professor Matthews was nervous, and hoped like crazy it did not show when the students entered the classroom. After having gone through the muggle studies closet just to see what was available for her use, Professor Matthews, have felt, for a moment, that she had taken on quite a bit. The entire closet was arranged so backwards that it took her nearly a week to sort it out. Though, that eventually made it easier to plan for the lesson today.
Upon entering the classroom, students would see on the board the words "Cooking with Muggles" along with several muggle items laid out on the table. Once the students had come in and taken their seat, Professor Matthews began the lesson:
"In the muggle world, there is no heating charms and the majority do not use an open fire to cook with. Instead, they use their electricity to power items necessary to cook with. The items here are all common to muggle homes, and have been charmed to operate as if they were plugged in."
Professor Matthews, held up a plug that was connected by cord to her first item and continued.
"This is what the muggles call a microwave. They heat food inside with the touch of a few buttons. I have here bowls of water and a sheet that explains how to put and object in and push the correct buttons to make it work. Please do not place a bowl in there for more than thirty seconds so there is time for others to give it a try."
She had given a short demonstration, putting the bowl of water into the microwave, heating it, then pulling it out, steam rising from its surface.
"If all the bowls have been used, let me know and I can cast a cooling charm on them for you. Next is an oven. Muggles place their food on a pan, pot, or skillet and use this method to fry, sautee, or stew, them place it on one of the top burners. There is a pot of water here that has been heated enough so you can see this happening. Do not for any reason touch any item with this oven. The bottom portion works similar to a microwave, but takes longer to cook, and can hold more."
When giving out her warning not to touch the oven or its contents, Professor Matthews scanned for any troublemakers whose brows may have perked.
"The last item is a fridge. There is no cooling charm, but a system of coolant in coils that is used. This keeps the food fresh and preserved longer, just as our cooling chests would. Inside, I have a surprise for each of you as a token for finishing this lesson. You may all come up and start with the microwave and work your way down to the refrigerator."
There was a little treat nestled inside of the freezer portion. Professor Matthews had wanted to go over well with the class, and so there were little bowls, each with a scoop of ice cream inside. Once the students had completed going over each item hands on, Kat would have given them their share.
